MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS ATTENDS SPECIAL SESSION OF ASEAN LABOUR MINISTERS AND SINGAPORE CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF WORK

SINGAPORE, 29 April 2019 - The Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr.) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, had attended the Special Session of ASEAN Labour Ministers and Conference on the Future of Work hosted by the Government of Singapore at the Swissôtel The Stamford on 29 April 2019.

The Special Session for ASEAN Labour Ministers was officially opened on 29 April 2019 by the Minister of Manpower, Singapore, Mdm Josephine Teo and opening remarks were delivered by the current ASEAN Labour Ministers Chair, M. Kulasegaran, Minister of Human Resources, Malaysia. The opening was attended by Labour Ministers and Vice Ministers of the ASEAN Member countries as well as the Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Mr Guy Ryder, and the Secretary General of the ASEAN Secretariat, Dato Lim Jock Hoi.

During the meeting, ASEAN Labour Ministers, the Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr.) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, had commended the work of the ILO's Global Commission on the Future of Work and their Report entitled "Work for A Brighter Future".

In his remarks, the Minister of Home Affairs recalled the recommendations of the Report of the Global Commission on the Future of Work. "The Global Commission report calls for, among one of its ten pertinent recommendations, the formal recognition of a universal entitlement to lifelong learning and the establishment of an effective lifelong learning system that recognizes and is aligned to the transformative power of new contemporary technologies on the world of work." he said. "Brunei Darussalam is actively crafting and constructing avenues, for those seeking more fulfilling and productive employment, to diversify their skill sets to match the contemporary and ever-growing digital economy. Concurrently, we nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of our citizens and encourage the formulation of new businesses that utilize new technologies and innovation, that go beyond the traditional".

During the Special Session for ASEAN Labour Ministers, Ministers had adopted and signed the ASEAN Labour Minsters' Statement on the Future of Work that outlines and encourages actions to be undertaken by ASEAN Member States to; upskill and re-skill workers for the future of work, encourage businesses to harness new technologies, share best practices, promote fiscally sustainable social protection initiatives and increase cooperation between ASEAN and ASEAN's external partners including the ILO. 

Following the Special Session for ASEAN Labour Ministers, the Minister of Home Affairs and the delegation of Brunei Darussalam had attended the Conference on the Future of Work - which included two Concurrent Panels on "Embracing Technology and Promoting Human-Centric Agenda at the Workplace" and "The Role of Tripartism - Promoting Sustainable and Inclusive Growth" and one Plenary Panel on "Building an Agile and Future-Ready Workforce".

On the sidelines of the Conference on the Future of Work, the Minister of Home Affairs had taken the opportunity to meet with and exchange on matters of mutual interest with the Minister of Manpower Singapore, Mdm Josephine Teo as host of the Singapore Conference and the Minister of Human Resources Malaysia, M. Kulasegaran, as ASEAN Labour Ministers' Chair. To discuss and share views on the topic of the future of work, the Minister of Home Affairs also had the opportunity to engage with the ILO Director General, Mr Guy Ryder on the sidelines of the Conference.

The Brunei delegation included the Ministry of Home Affairs' Acting Permanent Secretary, Ajman bin Haji Meludin, Acting Labour Commissioner, Awang Muhd Saufi bin Haji Ibrahim as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Department of Labour.
